Detective inspector John Dickie is assigned to an unusual case, a serial killer is on the loose, but this one kills men by slitting their throats and disembowels them post mortem, very crudely to start with but quickly learning expert skills. The only clue is some trace DNA but nothing in the system matches, so the only thing they can say for sure is that they are looking for a man. Jenni Everitt is a young and very attractive freelance journalist looking for the one big story that will make her name, when she meets JD the attraction starts and she finds herself not only in the middle of a huge story but also in a relationship with JD that she is sure will, eventually, lead to marriage.
