✦ Synopsis

BUninlUly

This paper hes two major objectives. The first is to present a two-stage leaat square8 prooedure for estimation of the parameters in a linear model whose parameters are in themselves linear functions of some hyperparemeters. The eecond, and perhaps more important point, is that the new estimator can be shown to be generally more precise than either the Bayesian or the generalized eingle-stage least squares estimator reported by ~D L E Y and Sarmg (1972).

Hierarchical regression analysis holds much promise for epidemiologic analysis, but has as yet seen limited application because of lack of easily used software and the relatively lengthy run times of preferred fitting methods (such as true maximum likelihood and Bayesian approaches). A new "rst-order formulation for the two-dimensional elasticity equations is proposed by introducing additional variables which, called stresses here, are the derivatives of displacements. We apply the techniques of response surface methodology (RSM) to approximate the objective function of a two-stage stochastic linear program with recourse. In particular, the objective function is estimated, in the region of optimality, by a quadratic function of the firststage decision variables. T

The pharmaceutical process of wet granulation and tableting is described as a two-step process. Besides the process variables of both steps and the composition variables of the powder mixture, the physical properties of the intermediate granules are also used to model the crushing strength and disin
