Editor's note: The following article is reprinted from the Winter 1986 issue (Volume 6, Number 1) of Perspectives in Hospital Risk Management (now the Journal of Healthcare Risk Management). The article was selected by ASHRM' s Historical Task Force, which is preparing a memento book highlighting the society's first 20 years . In an effort to illustrate the growth of the profession of healthcare risk management over the years, the Journal will print one "retrospective" article per issue until the Fall 2000 issue, which will contain several older articles and conclude the retrospective printings. Also in the Fall of 2000, the memento book will be ready for free distribution to all ASHRM members. Feedback regarding the reprinting of older articles should be directed to Lynne Mangan, Journal Editor, who also serves on ASHRM' s Historical Task Force.
