✦ Synopsis

The basic equations for two-dimensional elastic waves propagating in a cylindrical anisotropic solid are found. The characteristic partial differential equation for the wavefront is solved by the method of characteristic strips and its solution, involving elliptic integrals, is presented in parametric form. A variety of wavefront shapes is possible, depending on the values of the material (dimensionless) parameters α, β and γ . The time history of one such wavefront is examined in detail.
