✦ Synopsis

Two-dimensional Fourier transform (2D FT) spectroscopy is applied to ion cyclotron resonance (ICR) to obtain direct evidence for mass transfer due to ion-molecule collisions. The 2D FI ICR experiment, which is closely analogous to 2D exchange NMR spectroscopy (NOESY), yields similar information to tandem mass spectroscopy (MS/MS), but could in principle be extended to study a manifold of mass-transfer processes simultaneously.

A method to generate the phase continuity necessary to perform broad-band two-dimensional Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (2D Ff/ICR) spectroscopy is proposed. This technique is used for studying ion-molecule reactions and multiphoton dissociation of ions in the gas phase. In a single two-

The ions produced by "'Cf plasma desorption are detected by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance techniques. Results for CsI and N,N,N-trimethyl-p-aminophenolate iodide show the feasibility of the technique with high resolution (up to 11 000 at m / z 23) and good signal-to-noise ratio (up to 72

Positive and negative carbon cluster ions containing up to 27 carbon atoms have been produced by laser vaporization and detected via PT/ICR mass spectrometry. A periodic pattern of "magic numbers" is found in the positive clusters. The application of this technique to the study of ion-molecule react
