โฆ Synopsis
The technique of twmlour laser-induced grating spectroscopy (LIGS) is used to obtain folded double-resonance spectra of the I2 B 'Il& tX 'C: system. The laser grating is produced with the second harmonic output of a Nd: YAG laser at 532.05 nm, and results in the population of three rovibronic levels of the B 311,$ excited state. The probe laser wavelength is tuned in the range 555.5-566.5 nm, and transitions are observed from the optically pumped levels to internally hot (v"=4, 5) levels of the ground electronic state. The spectroscopic information derived mimics that which can be obtained from stimulated emission pumping, however two-eolour LIGS possesses the advantage that it is an essentially background-free technique.

Laser-induced grating spectroscopy experiments at atmospheric pressures have a wavelength-independent component of the signal that limits the sensitivity of the technique. Experiments comparing this non-resonant signal to the wavelength-dependent signal show that its origin is electrostriction. The
