โฆ Synopsis
Charge carrier generation in single-crystal naphthalene is studied in the energy range 5.6-7.4 eV above the ground state, using two pulsed lasers with adjustable delay. Photoionization of the singlet exciton is observed with photon energies from 1.94 to 3.68 eV and a cross section that increases monotonically with photon energy. This, together with a very small ionization cross section, seems to indicate a continuous distribution of autoionizing states above the band gap and a very efficient energy loss of hot electrons and holes in this material.
