It is shown that the singlet and triplet transition energies of hydrocarbons may be calculated by means of the generalised Mataga-Nishimoto approximation for the two-center Coulomb integrals.

Overlap integrals of the type (2~10, (2~010 and t2pnlD have been evaluated for certain lanthanide and actinide awtvlacetonatei Slat&type orbit& with Bun& expone&, analytical Hartree-Fock Ivavefunctions and titeratomic distances taken from known crystal structure determinations of the same complexes have been used. The results indicate that the decreasing f-electron density with increasing atomic number predominate: over the corresponding contribution of the metal ion-oxygen distances.
