โฆ Synopsis
A non-disturbing flash photolysis dye technique has been developed for the study of turbulence in rough pipes and tested using a smooth tube and two randomly rough tubes having k/D = 040077 and 0.075. The turbulent fluctuations in the smooth tube were mostly in the axial direction. In the very rough pipe a swirling motion near the wall was observed but the core turbulence was mostly axial. Local, small scale diffusion of the dye traces appeared to be much more intense in the rough pipes than in the smooth ones. Prandtl's law of the wall was found to hold for all pipes at y/R less than 0.33 with the usual Au+ correction for the rough pipes. Measured and calculated values of Au+ agreed well.
