✦ Synopsis
If smaller engines, and lower oil consumption and emissions are all to be achieved in the future, boost pressures have to be increased.
However, in order to boost pressure, three major weaknesses in traditional turbochargers -blow-by, oil leakage and the exclusively horizontal arrangement of the turbocharger shaft -have to be improved. This is why engine designers agree that future turbocharger requirements cannot be met satisfactorily using the seals that are currently being used in turbocharger shafts.
