โฆ Synopsis
Located largely in a semi-arid region South Africa is one of the water-scarce countries of the world. It is also a country with a large and rapidly growing population which, due to historic reasons, as well as to the geographic occurrence of the mineral wealth which stimulated much of the economic development of the country, is mainly concentrated in areas remote from the major river courses. This resulted in the requiremer~ts for water in several river basins already far exceeding the natural availability of water, giving rise to the extensive interbasin transfer of water from areas of surplus to areas of deficit.
