Different current methods for tunneling spectroscopy are discussed. Spectroscopic measurements at low temperatures involving either vacuum tunneling or 'small-junction' tunneling are presented on different systems which show gaps in their density of states. In the Kondo insulators FeSi and CeNiSn, w
