The c a t a l y t i c and spectroscopic properties o f the photochemically a c t i v a t e d metathesis c a t a l y s t system W(C0),/TiX4/hw ( X = C l . Br. I) have been studied. A l l evidence i n d i c a t e s a high resemblance w i t h the chemically a c t i v a t r d Y(CO)6~xLx/RAlC12/02 systems. I r r a d i a t i o n of tho Y(C0),/TiX4 precursor s o l u t i o n causes loss o f CO ligands and has the s u m promoting e ff e c t as O2 f o r chemically a c t i v a t e d systems.
