Wavelength-tunable transient spectroscopy experiments with subpicosecond time resolution are performed with a new technique. The technique uses subpicosecond gating of a tunable cw probe laser. With this technique, spectral relaxation in S] in Nile Blue and in S O in rhodamine 640 is found to occur on a subpicosecond time scale.
