This pocket reference book is the latest in the series from the Oxford University Press. It is some 700 pages long and covers the wide range of clinical areas commonly seen by clinical immunologists. In the acknowledgements, the author, Dr Gavin Spickett, clearly states that this is a reference book which aims to answer the common clinical questions that land on immunologists' desks. This is not a basic science text, nor is it meant to be read like a novel. It is, however, the text which Dr Spickett wishes had been available when he was trainee, and I expect that most immunologists would agree with that sentiment.
Selecting through the chapters, there is a wealth of up-to-date information in all the key areas. These include primary and secondary immunodeยฎciency, autoimmune diseases, allergy, vasculitis, and immunebased therapies. Although succinct, the text is not simply a series of lists of rare conditions but includes practical advice on the diagnosis and management of disease. There are also sections on the use of immunological testing and, more importantly, the interpretation of their results. Furthermore, there is a section on laboratory managerial issues. One might
