✦ Synopsis

Conservation equations for a packed tubular reactor are modelled usmg a radmlly varymg axial velocity, radral dtiusrvlty and radial thermal conductlvlty Radial dlffuslvlty and thermal conductrvlty profiles are obtained from relations presented In this work Instead of usmg a wall heat transfer coefficient, the model accounts for the higher resistance to heat flow near the reactor wall by usmg a lower value of the thermal conductlvlty Axial dlffuslon IS not mcluded In the bulk of the bed, but its effect on the Inlet temperature and converslon profiles are accounted for by consldermg axial ddfuslon In the pre-reaction zone The two parttal drfferentlai equations are converted into ordmary ddferentrd equations by using orthogonal collocation m the radial duectlon The conventronal orthogonal collocation method IS modified by addmg balance equations at the center of the tube, so as to Improve the predIctIon of hot spot temperature The model was appbed to the sulfur dloxlde reactor of Schuler et al The results agreed quite we11 with the experlmental data wlthout the need for adJustment of parameters or constants

## Abstract Continuous polymerization processes have advantages when large amounts of product are required; moreover, higher quality can be obtained because of the elimination of variability between batches. Tubular reactors are economically attractive because of their simple geometry and high heat
