Abstract

Three novel triterpenoid saponins, tuberoside A (1), B (2), and C (3), were isolated as sodium and choline salts from the methanolic extract of the tubers of Ullucus tuberosus Caldas (Syn.: U. kunthii H.B.K.), which shows hypoglucaemic activity. Their structures were established on the basis of 2D‐NMR and FAB‐MS experiments and were confirmed by chemical methods. This is the first chemical study of a plant of the genus Ullucus.
