Lo invaden desde el mar grandes bancos de cúmulos, que se desmenuzan contra las montañas centrales, centenares de ríos descienden hacia amplios valles en que frutos y cereales crecen en tal cantidad que su valor es ínfimo. Los primeros colonizadores de Trullion trajeron consigo los hábitos de frugalidad y celo que les habían permitido sobrevivir en un entorno previo más hostil, la primera era de la historia trill trajo consigo una docena de guerras, un millar de fortunas, una casta de aristócratas hereditarios y cierta disminución del dinamismo inicial. Glinnes Hulden es un nativo de Trullion que se alista en La Maza y después de realizar un tiempo de servicio en ella, la deja y regresa a su hogar. Allí se encontrará con que su hermano Glay ha vendido una propiedad que Glinnes apreciaba mucho sin su consentimiento.
