✦ Synopsis
One should not be surprised that the oculodentodigital syndrome shows genetic anticipation [Shapiro et al., 1997]. On statistical grounds, any condition with a variable age of onset that reduces fertility will show this phenomenon. The reasons are spelled out in a recent commentary which lists 28 such conditions that show genetic anticipation, not counting those known to be associated with trinucleotide repeats [Fraser, 1977]. I am not aware of any that do not.
Before invoking trinucleotide repeats as a cause of a condition that shows anticipation, one should consider whether the degree of anticipation shown is greater than that expected on statistical grounds.
