Lithium chloride was found to be an effective and biocompatible catalyst for the ring-opening polymerization of lactide in the presence of hydroxyl-containing compounds. Ethylene glycol (EG) and methyl ␣-D-glucopyranoside (MGlc) were used as multifunctional initiators. The polymerization was carried
