## TRIBUTE I was privileged to work with Arthur Kling at Sepulveda from 1984 until his recent death. Art's understated style belied his passion for research. He did not waste words; his energy showed in his movements, particularly in his quick stride as he moved down the hall that led to the labs.

His thesis research was a ground-breaking study of the efficacy of typing in programming languages -Horning still remembers details about the high quality of the technical work (which involved implementing two compilers) and the empirical study whose methods and quality were far ahead of its time. John joined the growing programming languages research group at Maryland, but as the new field of software engineering began to emerge, most of the group moved in that direction. Harlan Mills was an important influence, nearby at the IBM Federal Systems Division.
John's research area eventually settled down to what is now described as the specification, analysis and testing of software. Beginning in 1979, a series of substantial grants from AFOSR supported his work. These grants were later very diverse and included other well known
