✦ Synopsis

EOPLASMS of the testis exhibit a number N of interesting and unusual epidemiological features. There has, however, been remarkably little investigation in this area. This may perhaps be explained in part by the relative infrequency of neoplasia in this site, which makes the collection of suitable material difficult. Data on large series of cases deriving from personal experience8 and from review of the literature0 have been published, but the populations from which such series were drawn were usually indefinable. A notable exception is Friedman and Moore's study of 922 cases occurring in an army population,8 but in this study the age distribution of the population at risk was limited, and few epidemiological data were recorded.

Studies of the prognosis for patients with testicular tumors suggest that about 5001, die within 5 years of onset.12.1* Examination of mortality statistics may therefore serve a useful preliminary purpose in the identification of associations that might warrant further study through morbidity data. In the present report, data are presented on such associations of mortality from testicular tumors as could be examined through published mortality statistics for the United States and a survey of death certificates of persons dying in New York City

We read with interest the article in HEPATOLOGY by Bosetti et al. on trends in mortality from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Europe, 1 and are struck by the low mortality rates in Sweden. Our experience from the work with register studies on mortality and incidence of liver cancer 2,3 tells us th
