trolleys for bronchoscopy, tracheostomy, and pleural drainage described. Radiological considerations follow and are illustrated by excellent and well-selected radiographs which include highly specialized angiocardiographic procedures. This is one of the best chapters of the book. The surgical operations in pneumothorax, empyema, cardiac tamponade, injuries to the chest wall v d thoracic viscera, and other emergencies are described in turn. A chapter on congenital malformations and respiratory emergencies in newborn and infants follows.
Minor criticisms could be made concerning the over elaborate equipment for emergency surgery, e.g. over fifty instruments are laid out for tracheostomy (Fig. ). The technique of surgical closure of an instrumental perforation of the cervical oesophagus deserves a more detailed description and an illustration. In the differential diagnosis of stridor in infants the value of direct laryngoscopy is not emphasized enough, although the causes of laryngeal obstruction are enumerated. Sedation in the treatment of croup is recommended, but it is not emphasized that it may only be considered after the airway has been restored.
The book will be valuable as a refresher course for those who wish to keep up with present-day techniques and for trainee thoracic surgeons who have joined a well-equipped chest unit from another speciality.
