Abstract
Over the past decades considerable advances have been made in neurosurgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy resulting in improved survival and cure rates for children with brain tumors. Here we review four of the most common subtypes of pediatric brain tumors, lowβgrade and highβgrade astrocytomas, medulloblastomas and ependymomas, highlighting their molecular features regarding their tumor biology, and promising potential therapeutic targets that may hold promise for finding new βmolecular targetedβ drugs. Importantly, appropriate clinical trial design will play a critical role in the evaluation of new and novel treatment approaches for pediatric brain tumors. J. Cell. Physiol. 217: 584β589, 2008. Pediatric brain tumors differ from adult brain tumors in several major ways. First, the types of tumors encountered in children are uncommon in adults, and vice versa. Second, tumors of the posterior fossa comprise a far greater percentage of tumors in children as compared to adults. Third, the valu
Key elements in the modern surgical treatment of metastatic brain tumors are a firm grasp of criteria for selection of proper surgical candidates and a thorough grounding in the surgical approaches to, and the anatomy of, cerebral metastases. It is important to realize that the presence of multiple
Previous prospective and retrospective trials have failed to demonstrate the best treatment approach for patients with brain metastases. As a result, fractionated whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) has been the mainstay of treatment for several decades. However, with improved surgical techniques and th
