8-bromo-6.7~hydrobenzocycloheptene 16 and 9-bromo-6,7-benzocyclohep@diene 17 have been syntheeizd via a new and simple method, and their allene mactions wxe stodied. Treatment of 16 with a base in the presenw of DPIBF (diphenyli sobenzofuran) gave the strained bicyclic allene 9, which underwent a cycloaddition rsactiontoyield25and26.Ontheotherhand,thereactionofthevinylbromide17witha~,eitharinthe pmaenca or absenw of DPJBF, resulted in the formatioo of 7Wbenzocycloheptadiene 21, rather than the alkyne 22.
