✦ Synopsis
We present the currently planned layout for the HITRAP facility, which is now under construction at GSI. The new facility is intended to decelerate ions up to A/q 6 3 from 4 MeV/u down to 6 keV/u by a combination of new IH and RFQ structures operating as decelerators. Finally, cryogenic temperatures will be reached by subsequent electron cooling and resistive cooling. A total of 10 5 ions/pulse is expected at a repetition rate of 0.1 Hz. Possible experiments range from precision spectroscopy of one single ion in a trap to collision experiments with slow highly charged ions in a reaction microscope or at surfaces.
