✦ Synopsis

The pulses generated by asperity interactions between meshing gears can be detected easily by accelerometers mounted on a rotor, but have not been observed with detectors on bearing housings. A set of tests was carried out in an attempt to explain the discrepancy, and the results are given and discussed. The results suggest that monitoring on bearings to give early damage warning is not likely to be as effective as rotor monitoring.
