โฆ Synopsis
A n unusual case of transitional cloacogenic carcinoma of the distal female urethra is reported. T h e s e tumors are embryologically related to similar lesions that occur a t the anorectal junction.
HE TERM "TRANSITIONAL CLOACOCENIC
T carcinoma" was proposed by Grinvalsky and Helwig,' in 1956, for those tumors whose histologic pattern resembles the embryologic remnants of the cloaca. Though this term had been applied primarily to lesions occurring at the anorectal junction, similar tumors that appear at the distal portion of the male and female urethra which are of the same embryologic derivation should also be referred to as transitional cloacogenic carcinoma. Other authors7 refer to most of these tumors as basaloid carcinoma because of their resemblance to basal cell carcinoma of the skin.
Our purpose here is to report an unusual case of transitional cloacogenic carcinoma with basaloid characteristics occurring in the distal female urethra. Except for one case of transitional cloacogenic carcinoma of the distal male urethra reported by Robinson and Jordan,5 we did not encounter similar case reports particularly of the female urethra.
