โฆ Synopsis
A simple transient theory of a single basin solar still which includes the effect of water flowing over the glass cover is presented. The daily distillate production of the system is almost doubled by lowering the temperature of the glass cover by water flowing over'it at a uniform velocity. Dependence of various operating parameters on the performance of the system has been studied. SYMBOLS b -breadth of solar still, m CW -specific heat of water, J/kg'C 4 -solar intensity, W/m2 hi -total heat transfer coefficient from water surface to glass cover, W/ m2'C hz -combined radiative and convective heat transfer coefficient from glass to ambient, W/m2 'C h!2 -convective heat transfer coefficient from glass cover to flowing water, W/m2 OC h3 -heat transfer coefficient from the absorbing surface (blackened surface) to the water in basin, W/m2 'C hb -overall heat transfer coefficient from basin liner to atmosphere through bottom insulation, W/m2 'C hell -convective heat transfer coefficient from glass to ambient, W/m2 OC *Work partially supported by Commhi on for Additional Sourcea of Energy, Government of India.
