✦ Synopsis
Analytical solutions are presented for three problems involving transient diffusion in a tube, with boundary conditions which account for well-stirred end-bulbs of finite size. These boundary conditions make the problems non self-adjoint in the usual sense. The first two problems involve only ordinarv diffusion. while the third involves both ordinarv and forced diffusion. The second and third problems are apphcable to the purification of gases by means of cataphoresis. In the cases involving ordinary diffusion, for large bulbs of equal size the characteristic dimensionless time rr = 6/2 where 6 is the ratio of the bulb volume to the tube volume. For a given time in each problem, the series solution converges more rapidly with increasing 6. When the bulb volumes are about ten times greater than the tube volume, only the first few terms in the solution are required to accurately generate the concentration profile at zero time.
