โœฆ Synopsis

Trzmsient nut~tions ofnbsorption and dispersion mode ESR signals from fluid soltrtions arc reported. ;tnd tkc coffditions for their appearance analysed. Their use in measuring the microwave field in the cavity and in the datcction of exchange fxocesses are described. When a twoelevei system is brought rapidly into resonance the detected signal may osritlate [I, 21.

This effect was first observed in NMR, for there the period of oscillation is long and the signal damping sIow on account of the sfow refaxation of the nuciei: radiation can be applied in a time short compared with the signal decay, and measurements need not commence immediately after the transitions begin.

Electron-spin transient nutation is exploited to simplify complicated solid state ESR spectra. The procedure makes use of the dependence of the nutation frequencies on the transition matrix element of the excited ESR line. It is demonstrated that this frequency dependence can be used to disentangle

The ESR was investigated for a series of samples of glassy carbon hear-treated to various temperatures in the range 10~~30~5C using a Q and X band spectrometers. For the sotid material, the width first increases slightly, then goes through a rninil~u~~~ at around 1400ยฐC and increases greatly above H
