## Abstract The mathematical equations for heat transfer between a flowing fluid and both slabβshaped and spherical particles with intraparticle conduction in a fixed bed, are numerically solved using the method of lines. The solution for spherical particles was used to confirm previous results for

Abstract
Transient heat conduction in a composite slab is investigated in the present work by using the orthogonal collocation method. The present numerical method is found to be quite efficient and highly stable even for the powerβtype temperature dependence of thermal conductivity which often cuases severe computational instability to many numerical methods.

In this paper, the Transversal Method of Lines (TMOL) or Rothe's method is employed to obtain analytical expressions of simple form for the unsteady onedimensional heat conduction in a slab. Initially, the slab is maintained at a uniform temperature, and then a uniform heat flux is applied to its su
