✦ Synopsis

Stress reduction tests were performed during steady state tensile creep of AI-IL wt.",, Zn at 23 K and constant stresses between 10 and 30MPa. The decrease of dislocation density and the variation of creep rate following the stress reductions were measured. While after small stress reductions the creep rate varies according to normal transient creep behaviour. a new type of anomalous transient creep is found after sufficiently large reductions of stress. Incubation periods of zero creep rate could not be detected. The rate of decrease of the dislocation density after stress reductions is not a unique function of the dislocation density, but depends also on the rate of preceding steady state deformation.

The results are inconsistent with the network theory of creep and support the conception that an appreciable portion of the applied stress during steady state creep is needed as effective stress for dislocation glide.
