The role of temperature-dependent viscosity is studied in the Row and vortex instability of a heated horizontal free convection boundary layer flow in a saturated porous medium. For an isothermal surface, similarity solutions are found to exist for viscosity variation expressed as a general function

โฆ Synopsis
The oblique interaction of a vortex ring with a boundary in shear flow is considered by the method of three-dimensional vortex singularities (vortons). It is demonstrated how a vortex ring transforms into a horseshoe vortex. The results are in agreement with laboratory observations. The possible application of this approach to the problem of aircraft accidents, caused by downbursts in the atmospheric boundary layer, is briefly discussed. * Some results were announced in ), Novikov (1985a, b) and presented by the author at the IUTAM Symposium on fluid mechanics (Cambridge, March 1986).
