For an nssignmcnt of geometrical isomers from band splittings of the first spin allowed electronic transition only relative order s of cubic ligand field parameters as given from the spectrochemical series are necessary.

✦ Synopsis
The title compound, bis(l-histidinato)cobalt(III)-chloridenitrate-water (1/0.4/0.6/2.5), [Co(C 6 H 8 N 3 O 2 ) 2 ]Cl 0.4 (NO 3 ) 0.6 Á-2.5H 2 O, crystallizes as a mixed chloride/nitrate hydrate salt. This crystallographic experiment validates earlier research which concluded that the red chromatographic fraction contains the trans-imidazole isomer of the complex. The asymmetric unit contains two complex cations, 0.80-chloride, 1.20-nitrate, and five solvent water molecules.
