β¦ Synopsis
Measurements of road traffic noise were made at 18 locations on single-carriageway hilly main roads, subjected to speed limits, in the Greater London area. The observation sites were 10 m from the kerbside and in positions where the flow of vehicles was relatively steady.
Variations ofL~o, Lso and Lgo with rates of flow of heavy and light vehicles, and also with gradients, were determined. The changes of the sound levels with vehicle flow followed a predicted pattern. Because of the relatively high degree of scatter obtained in determining mean values of Lmo, L~o and Lgo under given conditions, for a particular gradient, no definite relation could be established between sound levels and gradient.

Statistical properties of road traffic noise have been investigated, based on a model in which point sources of the same acoustic power are distributed on an infinite line in such a way that the spacing between successive point sources has, as a probability density function, an exponential distribut
