β¦ Synopsis
The article by Wang et a1.l presented an in-depth review of tracheostomy complications with emphasis on several unusual ones. The authors make several suggestions as to how they believe one can minimize the likelihood of these complications. However, they advise that their numbers are as yet too small "to comment on whether significant reductions in the incidence of rare serious infectious complications are achieved" by using these techniques.
The authors suggest the use of a technique modified from Eliachar' which uses a large horizontal incision with omega-shaped skin flaps. They also suggest occasional resection of adipose tissue and the placement of lateral drains.
