Abstract

The diffusivities of Ag^110m^ and Sn^113^ in bulk Ag~3~Sn were measured using the method of Gruzin. The volume diffusion coefficients were determined over the temperature range 200 to 400Β°C, with temperature dependence given by D \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop = \limits_ \cdot $\end{document} 1.03 Γ— 10^βˆ’3^ exp (βˆ’22,400/RT) and D = 4.01 Γ— 10^βˆ’4^ exp (βˆ’22,800/RT) cm^2^/sec. The fact that silver is the faster moving species in bulk Ag~3~Sn is important to the amalgamation process. On the other hand, it was found that along grain boundaries, tin tracer atoms diffused faster than did silver atoms. Faster grain boundary diffusion of tin, however, may not be a decisive factor in the actual amalgamation process, since mercury penetration exceeds the migration of tin atoms along grain boundaries.

The reactions between liquid mercury and high purit,y tin, silver, and silver-t,in dental alloy (Ag,Sn) were studied at 30Β°C. Polyhedral-shaped cryslals formed both on the tin and Ag3Sri specimens, while no crystalites were detected on the surface of the silver. The cryst, als on the tin surface were
