Abstract

A method has been developed for computational trace generation of the temporomandibular joint on a radiogram in order to support its morphological study. Four elements were traced. While such a radiogram is deteriorated by blur, the shape and the geometrical configuration among the elements are rather stable. Therefore, the model‐based approach was adopted. Periodicity‐based preprocessing removes the grid image. Each element is enhanced by model‐based mask operation, and then traced by optimizing a model‐based objective function by using dynamic programming. Feasibility was studied by proposing two features for numerical characterization. Β© 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
