โฆ Synopsis
A simplified yet sensitive system is described for the detection of the twophoton ionization signal in solution. The photo-ionization cell consists of a quartz cuvette and a pair of stainless steel electrodes. Several aromatic compounds, including quinones, can be detected in the ng l-I-mg 1-l range both in hexane and in methanol; detection limits of pyrene in hexane and in methanol are 0.02 pg 1-l and 4 rg l-l, respectively. The detectability in hexane is much better than that in methanol. The detection limits and the molar absorptivities at the excitation wavelength are shown to be correlated.

For both molecules the TPI spectra show distinct structure due to autoionization. For fluoranthene the TPI spectrum suggests
Excited states and autoionization states of the erbium atom were investigated by the use of multicolor resonance ionization mass spectrometry. Among the observed first excited states, a level [4f 12 ( 3 H 6 )6s6p( 3 P 1 )] located 17,348 cm 01 from the ground state is regarded as the most efficient
