Al vele malen heeft de speurtocht naar de planeet Aarde Dumarest bijna het leven gekost. Als hij reist van wereld naar wereld, een voortdurend rusteloos bewegen naar de uitersten van het heelal, moet Dumarest voortdurend oplettend en waakzaam zijn.
Ditmaal raakt Dumarest verzeild op de planeet Toy. De gigantische computer die zich op deze wereld bevindt kan hem de gezochte gegevens verstrekken. Toy geeft echter niets voor niets en Dumarest moet deelnemen aan de lugubere volksspelen.
