Characteristics
Chlorobenzene is a colorless, refractive volatile liquid and it is insoluble in water (to 0.0488 wt%). It is freely soluble in alcohol, benzene, chloroform and ether. It is produced by the chlorination of benzene in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, usually ferric chloride, and it is isolated by distillation and crystallization.
Chlorobenzene can be detected in air at 6x0 ppb. In air, 1 ppm = 4.6 mg-3. The concentration of chlorobenzene in water that will generate the California Permissible Exposure Limit in the headspace of a stoppered flask is 5.5 ppm. The water dilution odor threshold in a stoppered flask is reported as
