The high spin state and long electronic relaxation time of the gadolinium(iii) ion renders it an ideal basis for contrast media for use in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The throughspace dipole-dipole interactions by which the unpaired f electrons of gadolinium catalyze the relaxation of proximate water-molecule protons are strongly distance dependent.
