β¦ Synopsis
In 1973 an editorial appeared in this journal from the pen of Julius Grant [I] entitled "Towards a New Profession". Dr Grant's thesis was that there was no qualification, either national or international, for forensic scientists and he proposed that "the Fellowship of the Society could be awarded to those who comply satisfactorily with an acceptable standard of ability, expertise, integrity and knowledge". In 1985 the same writer, whilst noting the achievements of the Society in its first 25 years, regretted that his suggestions for a "professional body of scientists and all that this involves, notably the setting up of standards of qualifications in order to raise standards of expertise and exclude the back door expert" had not been taken further [2].
