The treatment of bulimia nervosa has attracted a remarkable amount of research attention over the past 15 years. Over 40 randomized controlled trials have been completed and their ®ndings have been remarkably consistent. As a result evidence-based treatment is possible, the challenge being how best to implement it.

Cognitive±behaviour therapy must occupy a central place in any evidencebased treatment programme. It is the treatment that produces the best results . Treatment trials from Britain, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand all testify to its effectiveness with no other treatment producing as good results if maintenance of change is taken into account.
