Abstract
Using Goell's point matching method under weak guidance condition, the modal characteristic equations of a curvilinear triangular cored optical waveguide are obtained in three cases. In one case the proposed waveguide has on its one side a conducting material and other two sides are bounded by dielectric material. We describe it as dielectric‐dielectric‐metal (DDM) waveguide. In other case we consider both the boundaries conducting. We call this as metal‐metal‐dielectric (MMD) waveguide. Finally, we consider all the boundaries conducting. We call this as a metal‐metal‐metal (MMM) waveguide. Results obtained in all three cases are compared. It is found that for a given V‐value the DDM waveguide will support more modes than MMD and MMM waveguides. Therefore, the MMD or MMM waveguides may be used as a mode filter. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
