✦ Synopsis
The paper provides an overview of the development of recreational activities, through tourism, as major uses of coastal environments. It identifies a number of relationships between environment condition and human impacts associated with recreation or tourism. These range from mutually supporting interests to conflict. It argues that, in the long-term interests of the environment and all usage sectors, coastal and shallow marine environment and resource management should be conducted on a multiple-use strategic basis. This should incorporate specific recreation and tourism objectives and strategies.
