Abstract

The article reports on a survey of tourism businesses at the Southwest New Zealand and Tongariro National Park World Heritage properties in New Zealand. Despite the international and domestic tourism significance of the properties the survey identified substantial gaps in business knowledge of World Heritage and associated values. Such a situation has implications not only for tourism business education and management in World Heritage areas but also further consideration of the role that World Heritage listing may actually play in attracting visitors as opposed to the intrinsic characteristics of the property.
