✦ Synopsis

In continuation of our investigation of biologically active natural neolignans',') we report now a simple synthesis of the racemates of two naturally occurring neolignans (1, 2) using methyl ferulate as starting material and silver oxide as the oxidation reagent.

The first compound, (-)-balanophonin (1) was isolated from Balanophora japonica Mikino3) and the second one (2), with the same substitution pattern, from Ziziphus jujuba Mill4), showing a significant PGI? inducing effect (Scheme 1).
