✦ Synopsis
As a consequence, Chap. 1, dealing with the foundations of the subject does not teach them nearly as well as the two summaries mentioned above. Even Onsager's Principle is stated in its restricted form, without makii the essential distinction between forces of class a and B or the equally essential extension due to Casimir to the case with an external magnetic field or rotation imposed on the system.
Solutions to detailed problems are treated in Chaps. 2 through 6, and it is here that the authors' recognized mastery of the subject comes through most forcibly. Even so, the catalog of solutions contained in these chapters (all, with the exception of Chap. 5 deal with one-dimensional geometries) will be understandable only to workers well-versed in the subject. As far as the beginner is concerned, the trend of thought is difficult to follow, and a deeper appreciation cannot be obtained without actually working out the problems.
